West Midlands Sports Development (WMSD) has worked in school settings for over 15 years, delivering high-quality PE and school sport across Walsall, Bloxwich, Cannock and surrounding areas. We work with schools, coaches, young people, children and families, providing opportunities for everyone to be engaged in physical activity.
We are now recruiting for two exciting roles and would love to hear from passionate, enthusiastic people who want to make a difference through sport.
1. Sports Apprenticeship Program
Location: Walsall, Bloxwich, Cannock and surrounding areas / Walsall Gamefit
About the role
We are launching a Sports Apprenticeship Program for passionate, energetic young people who want to build a career in sport, coaching and physical activity. You’ll gain real, hands-on experience delivering PE and school sport in primary schools and at our partner site Walsall Gamefit (walsallgamefit.co.uk), a growing community fitness and wellbeing hub.
What you’ll do
- Assist with fun, inclusive PE lessons and after-school clubs for children aged 5–11
- Support lead coaches in schools and at Walsall Gamefit
- Encourage children and families to be active, confident and proud of their achievements
- Learn how to manage groups, communicate clearly and create a safe, positive environment
Progression pathways
- As you progress through the program, you could move towards becoming:
- Sports Coach (schools or clubs)
- Community Fitness Instructor
- Youth Worker using sport to engage young people
- Performance Analysis and Sports Technology Strategist
We support your development with mentoring, CPD and recognised qualifications.

2. Sports Lead Mentor / Lead Coach
Location: Walsall, Bloxwich, Cannock and surrounding areas, with progression to Walsall Gamefit (Walsall)
About the role
We are looking for a Sports Lead Mentor / Lead Coach to lead PE and after-school sessions, mentor junior staff and apprentices, and help us maintain excellent standards in PE and school sport.
For suitable candidates, this role is designed to develop into a full-time position at our partner site Walsall Gamefit (walsallgamefit.co.uk), mentoring both staff and volunteers in an exciting new programme of activities. We would be open for suitable candidates and graduates who may wish to consider a higher-level apprenticeship program or higher degree training or support.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver fun, inclusive PE lessons and after-school clubs for children aged 5–11
- Lead sessions independently, ensuring safety, quality and strong behaviour management
- Motivate and challenge pupils of all abilities to participate and progress
- Mentor assistant coaches and apprentices, modelling best practice
- Liaise with school staff and support school sports events and festivals
About you
- Passionate about working with children and young people
- Sports Coaching / PE degree or NGB Level 2 (or higher) qualification
- Experience delivering sports coaching in primary schools or similar settings
- Strong behaviour management and inclusive practice
- Excellent communicator, well organised, adaptable and professional
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle preferred
